Fox fans named to IBCA Hall of Fame

McLEANSBORO — For the past 50-plus years, you could find Dick and Lucille Auten in the stands of a Foxes basketball game.

The Autens are being rewarded for their love of the game with induction as part of the 2013 Class of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Dick Auten began his love of McLeansboro Foxes basketball in 1949, his freshman year of high school, when he began attending games. He attended all of the home games and any away game to which he could get a ride.

In 1954, he bought his own car and began going to literally every Foxes basketball game.

In 1960, Dick married Lucille, and she became an avid Fox fan as well.

He went 25 years straight before missing a game, and he’s missed very few games in the last 45 years. And Lucille has been right by his side for almost every game, unless something came up with their children or at their business, Auten’s Pizza House.

Once, in 1969, Dick and Lucille traveled to Meridian to watch the Foxes play. Dick didn't like a call that a referee had made, so he let him know about.

The referee didn't appreciate Dick’s comments, so he kicked him out of the gym. Ever since that game, Dick has kept score in a small notebook to keep him occupied and out of trouble.

The Autens have also attended every state tournament game in which the Foxes have played.

They’ve not only supported the Foxes over the years by their presence in the stands, but they’ve also fed the basketball teams — both boys and girls — for the past 35 years.

They agree that they’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching and cheering for the Foxes over the past 50-plus years.

Dick and Lucille will be recognized on April 27 at a Hall of Fame Induction Dinner in Normal.
