Fox Fire trap team takes first place

SPARTA — It was coach Gary Nelson's birthday June 14, and that day he told his Hamilton County High School Fox Fire trap-shooting team that all he wanted for his birthday was a win.

First, second or third place, it didn’t matter, he said. The team assured him they would win it all for him.

And in just their second outing ever, they did.

It started with Levi "Long Distance" Hybbert running his first 50 straight and a total of 97 out of 100.

The other team members held up their end of the shoot, with Lee Donelson packing a hefty gun right behind Hybbert; Ross Welch, Matthew Owen and Jordan Brown cleaned up what was left.

The Fox Fire team again walked away with the Junior Varsity Division title; the team also handed Nelson the High Overall Team honor by outshooting every varsity and every class there.

Hybbert won the JV High Gun award with his 97/100, and Donelson tied for second and third place High Gun. In a shoot-off, Donelson never faltered, taking the second High Gun 23-22.

Hybbert also outshot everyone there, winning the High Overall Gun award.
