Letter: Our freedom depends on men making sacrifices

To the editor:

As July 4 is once again upon us, and this our 232nd year of independence, we should be in remembrance of all of the military personnel who have given of themselves to give us freedom and maintain it for all these years.

The World War II vets are now passing on at an alarming rate of 1,000 per day.

There are many from our county who deserve our recognition this week. I would like to take this opportunity to single out two men who are among the numbers who have passed on in 2008.

Kenneth “Cap” Boyer served with the 4th Division and landed on Normandy on June 6, 1944, at 10 a.m., landing on Utah Beach and serving till the end.

Marion Gunter, who passed away this week, served on the battleship USS South Dakota and was awarded many battle stars.

These two and thousands of others are why we are free. We will enjoy this weekend because men like these made sacrifices.

As Abraham Lincoln once said, “But we can never forget what they did here.”

Only the Savior is entitled to more thanks than these honored ones.#
