Fire destroys home

— McLEANSBORO — The cause of a fire which destroyed a local couple’s home last week was still under investigation, the city’s fire chief said Friday.
Fire destroyed the Route 1 home of Bill and Brenda Simmons, off Illinois 14 West, on May 7. The house was totally engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, McLeansboro Fire Chief Leroy Browning said.
“About all we could do was protect the surrounding buildings,” Browning said.
Firefighters received the call about 2:45 p.m. May 7, he said.
