Mitchell steps down at RLC

Local man resigns from college board after attorney general opinion

INA — Dr. Don Mitchell of McLeansboro officially resigned as a Rend Lake College trustee Tuesday.

The decision was made after the Hamilton County state’s attorney requested an opinion from the Illinois attorney general on whether Mitchell could serve on both the Hamilton County Board and the college board, Mitchell said at the RLC board meeting Tuesday night.

The opinion from the attorney general was that Mitchell could not serve on both boards, he said.

Additional information about why he was resigning will be released later this week, including reasons for the attorney general’s decision, Mitchell said.

Mitchell has served as chairman of the Hamilton County Board since his election to the board in November 2006. He was elected to the RLC Board of Trustees this past November and was the lone trustee from Hamilton County on the seven-member college board.

The college district includes Hamilton, Jefferson, Franklin, Perry, Washington, Williamson and parts of Wayne and White counties.
