Honoring veterans on their day

The local Veterans Day ceremony — held at 11:11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the McLeansboro American Legion Post 106 — honored servicemen and women for their sacrifices and service to their country. Rick Banks, Post 106 chaplain, played taps to end the morning ceremony. Also, the American Legion honor guard fired a 21-gun salute in memory and honor of all veterans. The ceremony included patriotic songs, and the 4-H Busy Bees performed a program in honor of veterans and unknown soldiers. Veteran Jim Simmons spoke to the crowd of more than 100 people about the soldier’s oath of allegience and the dedication and service it takes to keep our country free.
